Track light fixtures make it simple to highlight that favorite painting or simply add depth to any room. Whether you don't have enough space for a traditional decorative fixture or simply want to shine light from a variety of angles, track lighting works. It's flexible and easy to install. However, before you purchase and begin installing track lighting, there are a two questions you should ask yourself. What is the Purpose of the Track Lighting? The first decision you'll make will depend on where you're installing the track light fixtures and for what purpose. Whether it's accent lighting, general use, task lighting, or simple wall washing, it will require a different placement and perhaps even, a different lighting system. For ambient or general lighting, track lights work best in smaller rooms or, if it's in a bigger room, use multiple tracks to cover a larger area. Going with Accent Lighting For wall washing or accent lighting, track lighting is in its element. Because a track system is so easy to angle and direct, you can highlight a favorite picture or bookcase. If you're angling lights, try to angle them at an estimated 30 degree angle to reduce reflection and glare. Task lighting on the other hand is used to assist you perform tasks or activities around the house – like cooking, reading, or crafts. Track light fixtures allow you to supplement your overhead lighting with an additional light source pointed right where you need it. This makes track lighting great for over a kitchen island, office desk or workbench in the garage. What Features Would You Like Added? Track lighting typically comes with four add-on features, including dimmer switches, suspension kits, lenses, and connectors. A dimmer switch is fairly self-explanatory – it allows you to customize your light levels by turning the switch knob up or down. Suspension kits are used for high or loft ceilings. They let you suspend the lights from the ceiling at a lower level and bring the track lighting closer to the room. Lenses are special lenses that alter the color or shape of the light and can create great effects, warmer tones or eye-catching waves. Finally, connectors let you join track light fixtures into different configurations – such as an X or T shape, but using just one power source. The connector splits the power source and eliminates the need for two cords. See also: All Articles for Home Improvement Needs
