Sliding closet doors are great for small spaces.
Unlike hinged closet doors, they do not take up any floor space by opening into the space of your bedroom or living room, interfere with furniture placement or hinder movement.

How they Work
Sliding closet doors work by sliding back and forth on tracks.
There are two tracks, and the two doors always stay on their individual track, making it possible for the closet doors to either slide back and forth, or to sit in front of one another in the middle of the track, allowing access to the two ends of the closet.
Sliding closet doors are generally fitted with a flush door pull on the far side of each door, and can be tailored to be secured with a variety of latch and lock types as well.
The sliding door lock is quite popular, but key locks can also be easily fitted.
Materials
The materials that quality sliding closet doors are built from can vary. Many doors are mirrored or are built out of glass. Many contemporary designs use frosted, laminated, milky and clear glass to keep an open, airy feel to the space.
Sliding closet doors made of wood are considered by many to be the most versatile - especially for someone expecting to install their own closet doors.
Unlike glass, the wood can be easily trimmed and sanded to fit any opening.
The Illusion of Space
Mirrored sliding closet doors have a few advantages for those living in small space. First, and most obviously, they act as a mirror for the owner while getting dressed.
Secondly, they reflect the space they are set in, giving the illusion of more space, making a small apartment feel less cramped.
Using mirrors to create this illusion is a common design trick. It is simply made all the more convenient when using sliding closet doors.
Installation
Installing sliding closet doors is best left to a skilled carpenter.
It is important to make sure the space has been accurately measured and that the tracks and hardware are properly installed so the sliding closet doors do not come off their tracks.
