Self spray foam insulation is a great do-it-yourself project for someone looking to insulate their home and cut heating costs. Spray foam is much easier to deal with than itchy fiberglass, and this project is easy for even the most remedial do-it-yourselfer. Why DIY? Do-it-yourself home renovations, whether it is installing a gutter, putting in flooring or insulating your house, is always going to be cheaper than hiring a contractor. Remember that do-it-yourself projects are always learning experiences, so make sure you follow the old adage to "measure twice and cut once" and apply the meaning - to do your homework - to any home renovations that you decide to take on yourself. How Foam Insulation Works Foam insulation fills all the cracks it comes in contact with in walls and openings. Because it is a foam, it can work its way around the structure filling in anything that it comes in contact with. Foam insulation is actually a great project to take on as a do-it-yourself project. It is fairly simple to install and incredibly easy to adjust to your specifications. If you don't put enough in your first run through, you can just go back and add more. If you put too much, it is easily sanded down or cut away with a sharp knife. Where to Insulate? There are four main places to insulate in your home: the roof, the exterior walls of your house, floors and your garage and garage door. Basically, you want to insulate any part of your home where you can lose heat. The roof is perhaps the most important place to insulate. Because heat rises, you lose most of your heat through the roof. Applying Foam Insulation It's fairly easy to self spray foam insulation. You can buy kits that have the special spray gun that is required to apply the foam both online and at some home renovation stores. Once you have the kit set up, you simply spray the foam where you need it. The longer you spray in a certain spot, the more foam you will have. The foam expands, so it's best to use a light touch to begin with and to go back and add more foam where necessary after the first layer has hardened. Hiring a Pro Of course, if you are too timid to take on a project like home insulation yourself, you can always forgo self spray foam insulation and call a contractor to come in and take care of the project for you. This will be more expensive, but the job will be done professionally. See also: All Articles for Home Improvement Needs
