Kitchen Garden Windows:

A Guide to Kitchen Garden or Bay Windows Kits

Custom Search

Kitchen garden windows are an excellent bay window replacement. They're commonly installed over the kitchen sink and are a perfect location for sun-loving plants.

Benefits of Kitchen Garden windows

Putting a garden window kit over your sink can make a room feel instantly more spacious and inviting. It's also a perfect spot for kitchen herbs – they're easily accessible, simple to water and in direct sunlight.

Garden Window Energy Efficiency

Kitchen garden windows tend to be less energy efficient than a standard, replacement window. This is because there's a larger glass area (which transfers more heat outside in the winter and inside in the summer).

However, a new garden window can be an improvement over old, drafty windows in need of replacing. Most garden window kits today are made with high-efficiency glass and high-tech weatherstripping.

Installing Garden Windows

If you can install a replacement window, then you can install a garden window kit. Most kits are custom-sized to fit your window and go in easily and quickly.

If you're not comfortable installing your own kitchen garden windows, you can always opt for an installation. You'll have to pay extra for labor, but the install will be airtight and guaranteed.

Types of Garden Windows

Most kitchen garden window cuts come in wood, vinyl, or aluminum. However, vinyl is the most common type of frame as it is affordable, very energy efficient and requires a minimal amount of ongoing maintenance.

While wood frames are warm and attractive, they're typically more expensive. Wood requires a minimal amount of maintenance (regular painting and caulking), but it also creates a natural and rustic feel in the home.

Finally, aluminum frames require no maintenance and are exceptionally strong. If they have thermal breaks between the outdoor and indoor panes, they're very energy efficient. However, aluminum frames tend to be cold and add little to the overall design aesthetic of a home.

Garden Window Designs

Kitchen garden windows come in a variety of designs from side sashes to awning-style sashes. The side sash windows are typically hinged or vertical slider windows. The hinged versions that can open a full 90-degrees are best for catching summer breezes.

Caring for Plants in a Kitchen Window Garden

Even with super efficient glass, kitchen window gardens can get quite cold. So, if you're planning to keep temperature-sensitive plant varieties there year-round, choose a kit that comes with a seat muffler (an insulated bottom).

DIY Kitchen Garden Window

You can even make your own kitchen garden windows if you really want to save money. Using a wood frame and clear acrylic plastic, these DIY versions can be latched on to your existing windows during mild weather.
