The main advantage of the belt drive garage door opener is how quiet it is. However, belt drive garage door styles are also more expensive and require a larger up-front investment. However, because there aren't many moving parts in a belt-drive, they tend to be much easier to fix.
Chain Drive Garage Door Opener
The chain drive garage door opener is definitely the least expensive option of the three, but they're also the noisiest. The loud banging of the metal chain as it turns tends to bother many homeowners who are looking for a quieter door.
However, because the mechanics behind the chain drive system are so basic, it's also one of the most dependable. There are moving parts, but little can go wrong on such a simple system to need regular repairs.
Screw Drive Garage Door Opener
Screw drive garage door openers use a threaded steel rod to lower and raise the door. The screw drive tends to be relatively quiet, when compared to the chain drive door and also fairly low-maintenance.
Because the screw drive door runs on plastic tracks, this can minimize the sound and noise exponentially. However, plastic tracks are more prone to breaking or wearing down from wear and tear.
Whichever of the three garage door styles you choose, make sure your door comes with safety features like a manual override, vacation locking system and good safety sensors.
