Because it’s made with banana oil, Ultra Stainz-R-Out is one of the few biodegradable carpet stain removers. It comes in a concentrated liquid form and must be allowed to soak into a stain for 5 to 10 minutes before it can be rubbed off.
It’s pretty strong-smelling stuff, but it’s also fast-acting and very effective. If you can stand the smell, Ultra Stainz-R-Out is a great way to rid your carpet of juice, coffee and wine stains.
Woolite Oxy Deep zX
Price: $6.99/ 397g
Sold at: Zellers, Wal-Mart, Target, most grocery stores
Woolite Oxy-Deep claims to be one of the only oxygen-activated carpet stain removers. It’s designed to be sprayed on to the stain and left for about 3-5 minutes, then blotted dry.
While this cleaner works great on coffee and juice, it has a harder time with darker stains like red wine or thick, food stains. Typically, a few applications are needed. So, not as effective as the Ultra Stainz-R-Out, but it definitely smells better.
ProSolve Triple Action Carpet Stain Remover
Price: $5.79/ 650mL
Sold at: Wal-Mart, Target, most grocery stores
ProSolve is a spray-based carpet stain remover that markets itself as able to get red of really set-in stains like grease stains that have been left for days. You’re supposed to spray it on the stain, wait 5 minutes and then blot and rub it with a clean cloth.
The ProSolve comes in second place next to the Woolite. It works, after two applications, but it takes a little more muscle power and a bit more patience.
SHOUT Carpet Spot and Stain Remover
Price: $5.99 for 625g
Sold at: Home Depot, Lowe’s, Wal-Mart, most grocery stores
This is one of many foam-based carpet stain removers designed to penetrate carpet fibers and break up the dirt or stains inside.
After applying it, it needs about 15 minutes to dry before it can be vacuumed up. Then, you have to moisten it with a wet cloth and gently scrub until the spot is lifted.
The SHOUT Carpet Spot and Stain Remover isn’t just useless – it’s time-consuming. This poorly-designed cleaner takes forever to set and does little more than smudge the stains around on your carpet.

It takes a lot more muscle power, but homemade carpet stain removers are surprisingly effective. – as long as you get to the stain quickly and act fast.
